A decant is a small quantity of perfume poured from an original bottle into a travel-size vial, typically 2ml to 10ml. Same juice, smaller commitment.
You get to wear the actual fragrance on your skin, over multiple days, before deciding whether it's worth a $150–$400 full bottle.

Why Decants Exist (and Why the Fragrance Community Is Obsessed With Them)
Buying perfume blind is a gamble. You smell something at the counter, top notes only, on a strip, in a department store, and you make a $200 decision. Then you get home, wear it for a day, and realize it's not quite right.

The fragrance community caught on years ago. Swapping, splitting bottles, buying decants from trusted sources, it's how serious fragrance lovers build a collection without burning through money on bottles they regret.
What Makes a Good Decant
Poured from the original bottle. No dilution, no reformulation, no mystery liquid. The decant should be exactly what the brand put in the bottle, just less of it.
Properly sealed and labeled. A leaking vial ruins the fragrance and your bag. Labels should include the fragrance name, house, and concentration so you actually know what you're wearing.
Fresh stock. Fragrance degrades with heat, light, and time. A good decant source rotates their inventory. Old stock sitting in a warm room for two years is not the same fragrance you'd buy at the counter.
No atomizer contamination. If the same spray atomizer is used across multiple fragrances without cleaning, you're smelling cross-contamination. Pour-top or a clean dedicated spray only.

Decants vs. Samples: What's the Difference?
Samples and decants are often used interchangeably, but there's a practical difference.
Samples are usually 1–2ml, provided by brands or retailers, spray-applied from a sealed vial. Enough for one or two wears. Good for a first impression, not enough to really know a fragrance.
Decants are typically 5–10ml, poured from a full bottle by someone who owns it. More liquid, more wears, more information.
If a sample answers "do I like this," a decant answers "is this mine."
How to Use a Decant Properly
Wear it alone. Don't layer it with other fragrances on the first wear. You need to experience it clearly.
Give it three wears before deciding. Skin chemistry changes. Your perception of a fragrance on day one is different from day three.

Store it properly. Away from heat and direct light. A dark drawer works fine.
