You just spent £12 on a decant of something you've been wanting to try. The last thing you want is to open it three weeks later and find it smells flat, metallic, or nothing like what arrived.
Fragrance degrades. Light, heat, oxygen, and humidity all break down the aromatic molecules that make a scent what it is. With a full 100ml bottle, you might not notice, there's a lot of liquid and degradation is slow. With a 5ml decant, the stakes are higher: less volume, more exposure risk per drop, a smaller margin for careless storage.
The four enemies of fragrance
Light, UV light degrades fragrance compounds, particularly citrus top notes and some florals. Frosted and amber glass provide some protection, but direct sunlight will kill a scent faster than anything else.
Heat, High temperature accelerates evaporation and oxidation. The ideal storage temperature for fragrance is below 20°C. A warm bathroom shelf, one of the most popular places to keep perfume, is one of the worst for preserving it.
Oxygen, Every time you spray, a small amount of air enters the bottle. Over time, this causes oxidation. Minimized by keeping the cap firmly on between uses and not leaving a half-empty bottle untouched for months.
Humidity, Moisture affects the fragrance, and a humid environment accelerates the temperature swings that destabilize aromatic molecules. Fragrance belongs somewhere dry.
Where to store a perfume decant
Best: a cool, dark drawer or cabinet, away from windows, out of the bathroom, at a consistent temperature. A bedroom drawer works perfectly. A wardrobe shelf works too. Consistent temperature plus no light exposure is the combination you want.
Good: a fragrance tray in a shaded room, if you display your collection, keep it in a room without direct sunlight. Bedroom over bathroom, always.
Avoid: the bathroom, the classic mistake. Steam, humidity, and temperature swings (hot shower → cold room → hot shower again) are exactly what fragrance molecules don't need. Most bottles look great on a bathroom shelf. Most bottles degrade faster there.
Avoid: windowsills and sunlit countertops, even indirect natural light shortens a fragrance's life over months.
Avoid: the car, on a warm day, the interior of a parked car can exceed 60°C. Enough to permanently alter a fragrance formula in a single afternoon.
Special considerations for 5ml decants
Higher surface-area-to-volume ratio, a smaller amount of liquid has proportionally more contact with air inside the bottle. Once a decant is more than half empty, oxidation risk increases. Worth using it regularly rather than letting it sit for months after breaking the seal.
Atomizer cap fit, most decant atomizers use a friction-fit cap, not a screw cap. Make sure it's fully pressed down after each use. A loose cap lets the fragrance evaporate slowly.
Travel, 5ml atomizers are perfect for travel, but keep them in a zip-lock bag in your luggage. Pressure changes at altitude can cause pumps to leak occasionally.
How long does a decant last if stored properly?
A well-stored alcohol-based fragrance in a 5ml atomizer keeps for 2 to 3 years without meaningful degradation. Citrus-forward fragrances (heavy in volatile top notes) tend to fade faster than wood, resin, or musk-heavy compositions.
In practice: a 5ml decant used at 2 to 3 sprays daily will be finished in 3 to 6 weeks. Storage longevity only matters if you're rotating through multiple decants, which, if you're exploring from The Bar, you probably are.
What about oil-based decants?
Oil-based perfume decants (roller-ball or dabber format) have a shorter shelf life. The carrier oil, usually fractionated coconut or jojoba, can go rancid over time. A well-stored oil-based decant lasts 12 to 18 months. Same storage principles apply: cool, dark, consistent temperature. Use them faster than spray decants.

Can I store a perfume decant in the fridge?
Technically yes, a fridge is cool and dark. But temperature fluctuations from opening and closing it, and the humidity inside, aren't ideal long-term. For most people, a cool bedroom drawer is the better answer.
Should a decant be stored upright?
Spray atomizers should be stored upright when possible to prevent fragrance oil from sitting against the pump mechanism, which can occasionally cause the pump to stick or misfire.
How do I know if a decant has gone off?
A degraded fragrance typically smells sour, metallic, flat, or unpleasantly sharp. The bright top notes will smell harsh or medicinal. Trust your nose, if it doesn't smell right, it isn't.
Do decants degrade faster than full bottles?
Slightly, because the smaller volume means proportionally more air contact after use. This difference is minor with normal use. The risk is leaving a half-empty decant untouched for many months.
