It's named after a jazz club on Boulevard Raspail in Paris that Diptyque's founders used to frequent — long since gone. The fragrance is an attempt to bottle that room: wood, smoke-stained paper, powder, gin, and someone's perfume drifting past.
The short version
Dry juniper berries and soft jasmine over powdery cedar and tonka. Refined, faintly smoky, quietly confident. It won't get you stopped in the street — it'll get you asked what you're wearing by the one person standing closest.
What does Orphéon smell like?
It opens with juniper berries — the gin note. Dry, aromatic, slightly green and resinous, with none of the sweetness most openings lead with. It's an unusual and immediately grown-up first impression.
Jasmine follows, but not the heady white-floral kind. It's muted and clean, adding softness rather than perfume-iness. If you don't like florals, this probably won't register as one.
The base is the reason people fall for it: cedar, tonka bean and powdery notes. Dry wood wrapped in something soft and faintly sweet, with a whisper of smoke. It smells like a wooden room that people have been in for years.

Is Orphéon a masculine or feminine fragrance?
Neither, genuinely. Diptyque doesn't gender its fragrances, and Orphéon is one of the clearest arguments for that approach.
The juniper and cedar read traditionally masculine; the powder and jasmine read traditionally feminine. Together they cancel out into something that simply smells like a well-dressed person. It's worn about equally by everyone.
How does it perform?
Six to eight hours, with modest projection — close to the body after the first hour.
This is intentional, and it's the main thing to understand before buying. Orphéon is not built to announce you. If your benchmark is a fragrance people smell from across a room, this will feel weak. If you want to smell excellent to people you're actually talking to, it's calibrated exactly right.
